Story of the Week: Lions Club Serves Up Lionfish to Help the Environment

Our service projects take many forms, from scholarships to roadside cleanups and health clinics. The Hopkins Lions Club in Minnesota cooks up an invasive fish species to raise awareness and funds while cleaning up the coral reef in the Caribbean.

Lionfish crowd out indigenous species in Caribbean waters because they don’t have any predators. After learning about the negative impact on the ecosystem, Lions decided to sell lionfish kabobs at local events. Paired with vegetables, seasoning and lemon juice, the tasty treats made a healthy addition to several summer events. As diners lined up for a bite, a video told them why it’s important to take action and protect our oceans from lionfish.
