President’s Service Blog: Preserving Wildlife, New Zealand

April 22, 2011

As we celebrate Earth Day, it’s the perfect time to acknowledge the many Lions clubs throughout the world that are participating in the Protecting our Environment Global Service Action Campaign. While the projects that clubs undertake are diverse, they all aim to make our environment healthier for generations to come.

When Judy and I visited New Zealand, we saw a truly unique nature preserve. The Maungatautari Restoration Project is removing non-native vegetation to restore and reintroduce native species.

Lions actively assist with fundraising, provide equipment such as four wheelers and also donated NZ$70,000 to build an observation tower. This project gives school children and visitors a birds-eye view of the landscape, and an appreciation for the natural environment of New Zealand.

In this video, you’ll see our visit to the preserve and admiration of Lions’ work.
