Story of the Week: Judges Select 2011 Peace Poster Contest Winners

February 1, 2011

Note: Post updated on February 7, 2011, to include a link to a list of Merit Award Winners.

About 350,000 11-, 12- and 13-year-old students take time each year to imagine a peaceful world through our annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest, now in its 23rd year. Their posters are narrowed down at the club, district and multiple district levels before the final posters are judged at the international level. This year’s grand prize-winning poster was created by Raj Phairembam, an 11-year-old boy from Moirang, Manipur, India.

As the grand prize winner, Raj will receive US$5,000 and a trip with two guests to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations in New York City. The sponsoring Lions club president will also receive a trip to the award ceremony. The 23 merit award winners are from Argentina, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Malta, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, New Zealand, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, the United States (California, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Virginia) and Uruguay.

At this year’s international level of judging, 35 members of the art, education, media, peace and youth communities gathered at the Loyola University Museum of Art in Chicago, Illinois, where they used the contest criteria to narrow down 120 posters to 23 merit winners and one grand prize winner. Many judges expressed how honored they were to take on this task and how difficult it was to narrow down the posters from a collection of so many wonderful images.

In this video, you’ll take an exclusive look at the judging.

Wow, an 11 yr old boy drew this! Your talent is so great! You have a true spirit of peace. When I saw your poster, it reminded me about the negative situations on this earth. Once young people concentrate on what does peace mean, that is very rewarding in itself.

Just continue nurturing your talent, and I am sure you’ll become successful someday.

He’s 11? That art piece looks so professionally done! I hope he did it all by himself! Unbelievable work for that age.

I’ve chaired this event in our Lions Club for the past several years and passed it over to another great Club Member Margaret Napier who did an awesome job this year. I’m always very impressed with the beautiful posters. I can’t believe Raj is 11 — what a powerful message.

In the past I was able to purchase posters and or cards of the Peace Posters, when can we do that for this years contest? It looked like one of the judges was rolling up a poster of several smaller posters on one, is that available for purchase?

I’ve participated in the contest and it’s really neat to know that I’m promoting peace to other countries!

This has been an awesome experience for me, and I think other kids should try it too.

The Peace Posters have become more awesome each year. It is wonderful that the young people really understand what peace means. I have met many of the winners and am always impressed at their insight. Raj has done a wonderful job of stripping away all the ugly to reveal the beautiful. Thank goodness these children are our future!

Congratulations to the winner – what an amazing poster, and to all the winners. It’s obvious all the children worked so hard.

My daughter won her school, district and state. I can see her poster in the YouTube video of the International Judging. How do we get her poster back now that the contest is over?

Today our son received his award for winning at the multi district level. Even if he is not one of the top 23, he is still a big winner to us. Thank you, Lions, for offering this poster challenge on peace. It allows young people to really search their hearts for the true meaning of peace, and given the number of amazing entries, our youth could teach the adults of today many great lessons on peace.

Congratulations on your son’s accomplishment! We’ll post the 23 merit award winners as soon as possible, hopefully tomorrow.

Thanks for your comment! The artwork is amazing … especially considering the young age of the students who take part in our contest.
