Story of the Week: Judges Select 2011 Peace Poster Contest Winners
Note: Post updated on February 7, 2011, to include a link to a list of Merit Award Winners.
About 350,000 11-, 12- and 13-year-old students take time each year to imagine a peaceful world through our annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest, now in its 23rd year. Their posters are narrowed down at the club, district and multiple district levels before the final posters are judged at the international level. This year’s grand prize-winning poster was created by Raj Phairembam, an 11-year-old boy from Moirang, Manipur, India.
As the grand prize winner, Raj will receive US$5,000 and a trip with two guests to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations in New York City. The sponsoring Lions club president will also receive a trip to the award ceremony. The 23 merit award winners are from Argentina, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Malta, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, New Zealand, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, the United States (California, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Virginia) and Uruguay.
At this year’s international level of judging, 35 members of the art, education, media, peace and youth communities gathered at the Loyola University Museum of Art in Chicago, Illinois, where they used the contest criteria to narrow down 120 posters to 23 merit winners and one grand prize winner. Many judges expressed how honored they were to take on this task and how difficult it was to narrow down the posters from a collection of so many wonderful images.
In this video, you’ll take an exclusive look at the judging.

Wow, an 11 yr old boy drew this! Your talent is so great! You have a true spirit of peace. When I saw your poster, it reminded me about the negative situations on this earth. Once young people concentrate on what does peace mean, that is very rewarding in itself.
Just continue nurturing your talent, and I am sure you’ll become successful someday.
He’s 11? That art piece looks so professionally done! I hope he did it all by himself! Unbelievable work for that age.
I’ve chaired this event in our Lions Club for the past several years and passed it over to another great Club Member Margaret Napier who did an awesome job this year. I’m always very impressed with the beautiful posters. I can’t believe Raj is 11 — what a powerful message.
In the past I was able to purchase posters and or cards of the Peace Posters, when can we do that for this years contest? It looked like one of the judges was rolling up a poster of several smaller posters on one, is that available for purchase?
Thank you for supporting the Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Please send your mailing address and phone number to PR@lionsclubs.org, and we’ll see if we have poster reproductions available to send to you.
I’ve participated in the contest and it’s really neat to know that I’m promoting peace to other countries!
This has been an awesome experience for me, and I think other kids should try it too.
We’re glad that you were part of the contest this year, thanks for letting us know. 🙂
That is a fantastic art. The idea also behind this was outstanding. I would like to congratulate the student and the parents as well. BRAVO!!!

Amazing work of art.
GR8 message.
The symbol of peace white pigeon is taking away all troubles this world is facing, and what we are left with is Happiness and peace all over the world.
We the world are one.
We stand for all.
All for one, one for all is clearly visible here.
GOD bless Raj.
I have already circulated the poster photo in my home club, Lions Club of Bombay Sion.
It is inspiring to many.
Congratulations from all of us.

The Peace Posters have become more awesome each year. It is wonderful that the young people really understand what peace means. I have met many of the winners and am always impressed at their insight. Raj has done a wonderful job of stripping away all the ugly to reveal the beautiful. Thank goodness these children are our future!
Congratulations Raj Phairembam! Your artwork is truly amazing and awesome. So perfect, it almost looks like a photograph.
The artwork is amazing. Good job.
What a fantastic poster, it is simply beautiful, well done Raj simply amazing.
Congratulations to the winner – what an amazing poster, and to all the winners. It’s obvious all the children worked so hard.
My daughter won her school, district and state. I can see her poster in the YouTube video of the International Judging. How do we get her poster back now that the contest is over?
News and events.
Well done to Raj these children have so much to teach us adults. Also well done to the New Zealand contestant that did so well in a huge competition.
Raj should also be invited to attend International convention, so that he can be presented to Lions World delegates
Are merit award winners also ranked based on each score from the judges? Thanks
The merit winners are not ranked. All 23 merit winners are at the same level.
Today our son received his award for winning at the multi district level. Even if he is not one of the top 23, he is still a big winner to us. Thank you, Lions, for offering this poster challenge on peace. It allows young people to really search their hearts for the true meaning of peace, and given the number of amazing entries, our youth could teach the adults of today many great lessons on peace.
Congratulations on your son’s accomplishment! We’ll post the 23 merit award winners as soon as possible, hopefully tomorrow.
Will the results of the merit winners be announced also? My daughter had participated and I am wanting to know. Thanks.
Yes, we plan to update this post when we have a complete list of all of the merit winners (hopefully on Monday, 2/7/11). We’ll add a note at the beginning of this post to let everyone know when the link has been added. 🙂
Amazing work by Raj, he deserved the recognition with no inhibitions whatsoever, Lions Club of Basavanagudi, Bangalore, India congratulates Raj. God bless him.
This is amazing Raj Phairembam! Now I need a copy of it to display!!! Thank You for sharing this with us. It’s beautiful.
Thanks for your comment! The artwork is amazing … especially considering the young age of the students who take part in our contest.
