Story of the Week: The Lions Christmas Ship Delivers Holiday Cheer to Islands

December 22, 2010

Our members are willing to do whatever it takes to make our communities better places to live. With Christmas just days away, we wanted to share one of our favorite LQ stories.

We sent a film crew to Bellingham, Washington to see how Lions help people in small island communities where access to the mainland is limited. And children rarely have the chance to visit Santa. To bring holiday joy to these children, Lions set sail on the Christmas Ship dressed up as pirates, elves, clowns and Santa.

During the two-day cruise, Lions give away hundreds of gifts. Santa also makes time to visit with the elderly and homebound during this event. “It’s certainly well received on the islands,” says Harry Lane of the Main Island Lions Club. “It’s an event nobody’s gonna miss, that’s for sure.”
