Story of the Week: Lions Efforts Continue to Rebuild Haiti

October 28, 2010

When a 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti on January 12, Lions were among the first to provide supplies, support and housing. Nearly 10 months later, we continue to house almost 2,500 Haitians in two tent villages.

Now, with the help of the US$6 million that Lions Hope for Haiti has mobilized, we are building housing for displaced Haitians. On a recent visit, LCIF staffers scouted out sites where work has begun on new temporary dwellings for 600 families. The housing project is a joint effort between LCIF, the Lions of MD 111 Germany and HELP. When completed, this project will represent a significant portion of the available temporary dwellings.

During our visit, we experienced life in the tent village and toured the tent dwelling that one survivor calls home. We also had a chance to see the temporary dwellings as they take shape.
