Story of the Week: Lions, LCIF Committed to Relief Efforts after Earthquakes

March 5, 2010

As always, Lions are responding to the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.

Relief for Chile

Our Foundation, LCIF, is bringing aid to communities affected by the recent earthquake in Chile. LCIF has awarded three emergency grants to Districts in Chile, including District T-3, which includes Conception, the hardest hit area in the country. Local Lions will use these emergency grants to provide immediate relief supplies, including food, water, clothing, and medication.

Lions around the world are also responding, including Lions in Finland pledging US$25,000. And we’ve created a designated account for Chile earthquake relief donations. To make an online donation, please visit, select “Disaster Donations and include “Chile Earthquake Relief in the comments section.

Lions Hope for Haiti

Lions Hope for Haiti has mobilized more than US$2.2 million to provide relief and hope for the people of Haiti. Our members in Haiti have established tent cities for thousands of people in Port-au-Prince. Lions are now working to fully equip these tent cities with sanitation, kitchens and health clinics. Still, creating more permanent housing is becoming increasingly important as the rainy season approaches. The need will be great for many more years to come, and LCIF’s long-term efforts will help rebuild communities, lives and families.

Many of our multiple districts have made significant contributions to help rebuild Haiti, including US$190,000 from MD 112 in Belgium, US$100,000 from MD 116 in Spain and US$86,000 from MD 104 in Norway. You can see a list of generous donations to the LCIF Haiti Earthquake Relief fund from clubs, districts, multiple districts and individuals on our Lions Respond page.
